John Drake crafts cinematic songs merging classic melodies, rock n roll poetry with tinges of soul and country

For fans of: Sam Fender, Chris Stapleton, The War on Drugs, Nick Cave, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Kelly & Radiohead

When the Brisbane born singer-songwriter stepped off the stage in London's Hyde park in the summer of 2023, having performed to over 60,000 people supporting the legendary Guns n Roses, he felt a surge of wild achievement, as a pinnacle had been reached, but also the strongest call for home he had ever experienced.

It had been 13 years, countless miles and performances across Europe and the United Kingdom fronting ‘The Dust Coda’, a classic rock n roll band he co-founded in London in 2010.

The Dust Coda made significant waves with their 2021 sophomore album Mojo Skyline, which peaked at #27 on the UK Albums Chart and secured #3 in the Rock charts. In 2023, the momentum continued with their third album Loco Paradise, climbing to #36 in the UK and topping the Rock Albums Chart at #1.

Their track "Demon" garnered the attention of Sir Elton John, earning airtime on his Beats 1 show Rocket Hour and a spot on the prestigious "Elton John: Loves" Spotify playlist.

After so many years away from Australia, It was time for a change, propelled by a need to bring to life the contemplative, introspective songs he had been writing for the last decade.

These can be found on his debut solo album ‘Separation Songs’, recorded over two years, between Brisbane and London. Completed in September 2024 with ARIA-winning engineer Cody McWaters and longtime friend and producer Chass Guthrie, this album draws from influences such as War on Drugs, early Tame Impala, Nick Cave, Paul Kelly, Radiohead and Bruce Springsteen, to blend introspective storytelling with cinematic, sonic landscapes.

The first single off Separation Songs, Ocean was released in April this year, receiving critical acclaim internationally.

John then followed up with the release of two recent singles Siren and Running On Empty (Back To The Man), which premiered via The AU Review. The singles gained airplay on over 200 radio stations worldwide, including rotation on ABC Country and MMM Country

John Drake is back again with his new single Descending Love which will be available on all major streaming services from 17th October and an exclusive preview with the AU Review on 16th October.

There are many great singers, and many with great range and technical ability but I’d struggle to think of a singer that delivers performances with more heart than John Drake.”

To say John Drake has a fantastic voice is a major understatement; he can do heartbreaking vulnerability and snarling attitude with supreme ease, sometimes in a single tune”
